What is San Pedro Cactus?

Like peyote (and Peruvian torch, among other cacti), San Pedro contains mescaline—one of the longest-studied psychedelics in the world and the first to which that term was applied. Its effects have been described as empathogenic, (similar to MDMA) and potentially life-changing, promoting radical introspection, healing, and a sense of wonder and awe.

Traditionally, as today, San Pedro may be consumed either on its own or with other plants in a ceremonial brew called cimora. While its use as a psychedelic is technically illegal in the US, specimens are widely available for “ornamental purposes.”

What does it look like?

Its stems are light to dark green, sometimes glaucous, with a diameter of 6–15 cm and usually 6–8 ribs. The whitish areoles may produce up to seven yellow to brown spines, each up to 2 cm long; the plant is sometimes spineless. The areoles are spaced evenly along the ribs, approximately 2 cm apart. Echinopsis pachanoi is normally 3–6 m tall and has multiple branches, usually extending from the base. The tallest recorded specimen was 12.2 metres tall. White flowers are produced at the end of the stems; they open at night.

History

San Pedro has been called the materia prima, the primordial soup of the cosmos, and has long been revered by Andean shamans. Remnants of rolled-up San Pedro skins discovered in Peru date their use back to c. 2200 BCE. Later artifacts, including temple stone carvings, textiles, and ceramics, suggest the cactus was in use by successive pre-Columbian cultures, including Cupisnique (1500 BCE), Chavín (1000 BCE), Moche (100-750 AD), and Lambayeque (750-1350 AD). Many of these artifacts associate the sacred cactus with the jaguar, hummingbird, deer, boa, owl, snail, and stylized spirals or steps  — symbols thought to represent aspects of the visionary experience itself.

Chemistry

Mescaline is a phenethylamine alkaloid that is phenethylamine substituted at positions 3, 4 and 5 by methoxy groups. It has a role as a hallucinogen. It is a phenethylamine alkaloid, a member of methoxybenzenes and a primary amino compound.

Effects

Mescaline is usually prepared by cutting the cactus up into fine pieces and simply boiling them for a few hours before ingesting the water. Another form in which it is taken is by chewing the buds that grow from the cactus stem when it is chopped off at ground level. These buds can also be dried and ground – and then mixed with fluids. Most users say the taste of the cactus is extremely bitter and unpleasant.

Typically, mescaline users experience visual hallucinations (both open and closed eye) and radically altered states of consciousness. These are usually found pleasurable and illuminating, but they can be accompanied by feelings of anxiety or revulsion. Other negative side effects can include racing heart beat, dizziness, diarrhoea and headache. Mescaline containing cacti can cause intense nausea and vomiting, which was particularly valued by traditional Native American users because it was considered cleansing.
